Een demontabel theehuis van bamboe en washi (Japans papier) aan een frame van hout. Dat is Gyo-An van de Japanse ontwerper Shigeru Uchida (1943-2016). Een huis van 2.40 x 2.40 m gebaseerd op de maten van traditionele tatami matten. Een huis dat in je zak past, maar toch niet te klein is. Een huis dat geen ramen nodig heeft, omdat binnen en buiten elkaar vanzelf ontmoeten dwars door het ragfijne, natuurlijke materiaal. Een huis dat poëzie is zonder woorden. Een huis dat je nederig maakt, omdat je moet buigen om binnen te komen door een heel klein deurtje. Gyo-An buigt mee. Het fluistert. Het ontwerp van Shigeru Uchida hoeft zich niet zo nodig te bewijzen.

Utchida, tentoongesteld in galerie de Pastoe Fabriek (Utrecht), was jarenlang Pastoe’s belangrijkste ontwerper. In een wereld waar uiterlijk vaak het belangrijkste lijkt te zijn, geloofde Utchida in een harmonie tussen mens, maatschappij en natuur.

A house that does not need windows, because inside and outside meet each other naturally through the gossamer-fine, natural material. A house that is poetry without words. A house that humbles you, because you have to bow to enter through a very small door. Gyo-An bows along. It whispers. Shigeru Uchida’s design does not need to prove itself.

Utchida, exhibited in the Pastoe Factory gallery (Utrecht), was Pastoe’s most important designer for many years. In a world where appearance often seems to be the most important thing, Utchida believed in a harmony between people, society and nature.
