secrets of the heart | hartsgeheimen

Mijn zoeker zoekt verder. Ik close-up en klik en mis. De aarde is zacht en meegaand. Berthelot’s Pieper hipt buiten beeld.

secrets of the heart
The late hours before the sun goes down. My favorite hours. The day has eaten its fill. The sun like a flashlight with exhausted batteries points falteringly at a few stones. Two pigeons rest on the carcass of an old water mill in a soft glow. The wind scans the shore once more and rearranges with a mild hand. Waves breathe elastic.
I cherish these moments. My camera is rattling, I want to go. With the drive of someone who jumps into the deep end, I make myself as small as the smallest blade of grass. I crawl through the sand. Out of the earth I aim my lens.

A bird curiously poses right in front of me. My viewfinder continues searching. I close up and click and miss. The earth is soft and yielding. Berthelot’s Pipit hops off screen. Newborn plants as small as frays dance and chase each other playfully. I don’t see what I see, drop anchors. Feeling, reason, an ever-shifting focus. My memory card is smoldering. Burning sand. I melt into nothing anymore.

Then I walk back to my house in the very last light. From a grainy sand world, full of subtleties, I plunge into a somewhat coarser world of lamplight. Images roll out of the camera one by one. I now see what I saw, but from ’the other side’. Incomprehensible memories of a universe from which I returned. As if the images found themselves without me being involved. They crawled into the bloodstream of my lens and deftly infiltrated the sensor inside me.
